It's been a while since I have posted and that's probably the understatement of the year but I can't think of a better way to start again than with a sale on bacon flavoured products. Amazon

I have to say I was very disappointed in Nintendo's choice to name the Revolution the Wii (pronounced we). I see this going down in history as the most made fun of console name ever. Imagine someone not knowing about the Wii hearing someone say "I want to play with my Wii," or "I played with my Wii all day," or a kid asking "I can have a Wii for Christmas?" Put two consoles together and you have yourself a WiiWii. Joy. It's just bad. Bad Nintendo. I think it represents a like of foresight in naming and taste for company that has always prided its self on being family friendly. Nintendo says the the two "i"'s in Wii are suppose to look like to people standing next to each other and representing togetherness.
Sunday, April 16. 2006HD-DVD
Saturday I stopped by my semi-local (an hour drive) Best Buy and picked myself up a shiny new Toshiba HD-DVD player. I wasn't able to procure any discs but I have managed to use a combination of HDTV2MPEG, VideoReDo (not needed with all streams) and Ulead DVD Movie Factory 5 to convert transport streams captured with my HDTV capture card losslessly to HD-DVD. The process takes about an hour to do a movie or about half an hour to do a TV episode. The process is so fast since it doesn’t require you to re-encode the files. It'll be interesting to compare these tests against the HD-DVD copy of Serenity that should be arriving this week from Amazon.
For those interested in the process I use HDTV2MPEG to join the .TS files when needed and then use VideoReDo to convert them to MPEG stream files. HDTV2MPEG will convert to MPEG stream files but I had trouble with DVD Movie Factory 5 loading some of the files. After you have an MPEG2 stream file start an HD-DVD project in DVD Movie Factory and drop the MPEG2 stream into your project. Disable menu creation or use menus with no animation or you’ll eat up a lot of disc space and the final project will take forever to encode. Once you get to the burning process choose the option to create an ISO file and then burn your ISO file to a DVD using your favorite burning software. Your new HD-DVD (on DVD) should play back just fine on your Toshiba HD-DVD player. Tuesday, November 22. 2005Xbox 360 Is Coming
My Xbox 360 is in Mather, California and is scheduled to be delivered today. I'll through up some impressions after I'm able to put some time in with it.
Sunday, November 20. 2005XM Radio
I recently picked up an XM Radio kit at Costco since radio reception in my area is problematic and good metal is hard to find on the radio. I was very disappointed to find out that the heavy rock/metal channel is now only availabe online even though it was listed on the packaging. I wrote XM a letter noting my disappointment but I'm sure I'll just get a generic letter stating that they try and cater to the general public and the minority is sometimes over looked and how I can find two hours of metal weak on this station and how this other station is similar. I got this thing so I could listen to commercial free, uncut music that I can't find on conventional radio. I guess two out of three ain't bad but it's still very disappointing.
Anyone out there listen to Sirius and if so how good is their metel programming? I want to hear stuff like In Flames, Arch Enemy, Slayer, Iced Earth, The Haunted and Iron Maiden and not Godsmack, Creed, Slipknot and the like. Tuesday, November 15. 2005Xbox Gamertag
I added my Xbox Gamertag to the right column. Obviously it won't have much action utnil I get my 360 on Tuesday.
Tuesday, November 15. 2005Damn Porn Sites
A big sorry to all the legitimate sites that linked to Wildabeast.net but I had to remove the referrer information from the site as a bunch if low class porn sites were abbusing the system. I'll reinstate the list once I can find a way to prevent such abuse.
Thursday, November 10. 2005PC Games at HDTV Resolutions
Updated 11.14.2005
A couple months ago I bought a nice 50" HDTV that I hooked up to a HTCP running Windows Media Center Edition 2005. The set up works pretty well but I'm starting to get really frustrated with game companies not including custom resolutions or, like EA, only allowing the game menus to run at 640x480 or 800x600. Normally this isn't a big problem but unless I run my games at 1840x1036 (I'm compisating for overscan) I get huge black bars around the edges of the screen and the menu and or game is too small to play. Most monitors will stretch the image from the computer to fit the screen but not always on a TV. I'm stuck with a really small screen that takes up about one ninth of my screen and is surrounded by a lot of black. I don't expect older games to be able to do such high resolutions at a 16x9 aspect ratio but even some of the newest games on the market seem to lack this ability. So far I have been able to get the following games working perfect: Doom 3 Quake 4 Call of Duty 2 World of Warcraft StepMania TrackMania Sunrise The Movies The following games have been a headache for me: X-Men Legends II (I changed the resolution in alchemy.ini but it did nothing) Tony Hawk's Underground II Need for Speed II: Hot Pursuit Need for Speed Underground Need for Speed Porche Unleashed Bejeweled II Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (the game is hard coded to run only at 800x600) If any one know how to get any of the above working at 1840x1036 drop me a note in the comments and if I can get it working I'll move it tothe working list. If anyone is wondering I'm using a BFG gForce 6600 GT connected to my TV through component cables. I tried using the VGA input on the TV and it gave me a small black border at the suggest 1280x768 resolution. I have not tried using the HDMI input on the TV since I don't have a DVI to HDMI cable. Wednesday, November 9. 2005EBGames Xbox 360 Update
I was very happy today to receive an email from EBGames saying that Dead or Alive 4 is being delayed until December 1, 2005 and because of the delay Call of Duty 2 will be substituted for DoA4. The email went on to say that orders placed for the premium system before August 30th, 2005 should ship November 21st. I ordered my Xbox 360 on August 23rd so it looks like it should be arriving on my door step November 22nd.
EBGames also stated the all core system orders placed before October 28th would ship November 21st as well. Considering the two month difference in order cut offs it looks like most people are doing the smart thing and order the premium system. Monday, November 7. 2005Guitar Hero
I picked up Guitar Hero last week and this game rocks in more than one way. The list of songs is amazing. The game is the inverse of the norm. Usually there are maybe one or two song in a game I like. With Guitar Hero it is the opposite. There are only a few songs that I don't like but I'm will to tolerate them. Guitar Hero includes songs made famous by Pantero, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Religion, Blue Oyster Cult and many more. The songs aren't being played by the original artists but just like Karaoke Revolution they sound very close and won't prevent you from getting your rock on.
I have Guitar Freaks and Guitar Freaks 2nd Mix, or whatever they called it, and a Konami guitar. I played Guitar Freaks way too much back in the day and the music wasn't bad but you don't get the same feeling jamming away to music made just for the game as you do when you're jamming to White Zombie or Pantera. It's like playing air guitar, only cooler. Guitar Hero also feels more like a real guitar in that there are five buttons as apposed to the three used in Guitar Freaks. This makes you actually have to move your hand up and down the frets unlike in GF. This game officially comes out Tuesday the 8th but if you want to try and snag an early copy Best Buy has been selling them since the 1st. The website says it's on back order but if you check store availability you may find one in your area. That's what I did. Saturday, November 5. 2005Xbox 360
I pre-ordered my Xbox 360 (premium edition, you're an idiot if you buy the core version) way back in August the first day EB Games put up for pre-order. It cost a bloody fortune but I'm sure it'll be well worth it. Having to buy systems in bundles is really starting to irk me. I bought the four game bundle that will tentatively come with Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero and Dead or Alive 4. I'm really looking forward to the first three but I've been pretty burned out on the Dead or Alive series since the Dreamcast incarnations.
In my opinion the biggest thing going for the Xbox 360 is the improved Xbox Live. Sony's online strategy is a joke and Nintendo barely has a strategy at the moment. Here's to hoping I get it close to if not on launch day. Saturday, November 5. 2005
Ozzfest (AKA the Swedish Death Metal ... Posted by Wilda

Ozzfest was actually good for the first time in many years. So many great bands including Iron Maiden, In Flames, Arch Enemy, The Haunted and Rob Zombie, I forced my self to endure Wicked Wisdom (they were by far the worst band there), Kill Switch Engage and Mudvane. The MTV rocker freaks were a mixed blessing as they provided entertainment in between sets as we poked fun at their outfits. We say one lady wearing a pink Ramones getup. Last time I checked Ozzfest wasn't pink and wasn't punk.
The highlight of the night was Iron Maiden. They were by far the best band there putting headliners Black Sabbath to shame. Bruce was his classic self taking every chance he could to poke fun at Ozzy and the music industry. I think this may have played a huge part in the attack on the band (rumored to have been organized by Sharon and crew) during the last Ozzfest date. MTV, BlabberMouth, About The attack could have also been because Iron Maiden was getting all the press. Sorry I don't have links to the original articles. This list was sent to me by one of my friends that went to the concert with me. Pittsburgh Daily News – “The night belonged to Iron Maiden, and the crowd treated them like royalty, easily giving them the most raucous reaction of any of the bands assembled. Dickinson and Maiden put the younger bands on the show to shame, and Dickinson was almost giddy as he led the masses in singalongs of classics such as opener ‘Wrathchild’, ‘The Trooper’ and ‘Run To The Hills.’“ New York Times - 'Spry and mischievous as ever (he delivered a tirade against MTV and reality shows, which is mischievous only if you're about to cede the stage to Mr. Osbourne), Dickinson sounded and looked like a man leading his troops into battle, although under a foreign flag: he waved a huge Union Jack.' Hollywood Reporter - 'Maiden held the second slot to Sabbath and in 70 minutes walked away with the whole show... Iron Maiden is the standout on this tour and - to paraphrase Dickinson - rocks ‘like a bastard!’'. Chicago Tribune - 'Dickinson's soaring battle-cries held the near-capacity crowd spellbound while his high-energy performance made many of the festival's acts look lazy and tired.' Boston Globe – “The band that stole the show yesterday was Iron Maiden, with Dickinson… climbing stairs to ramps at either side, from which he exhorted the crowd into a horn-saluting frenzy with such songs as '’Wrathchild’ and ‘Run To The Hills,’ aided by a triple-guitar attack and inflatable beast with neon blue eyes, and changing rear curtains that made their set feel like a Broadway play.” The Freelance Star, Virginia – “Iron Maiden deserves every accolade thrown its way over many years of hard-rock excess… After decades of domination, Iron Maiden showed that well-structured songs, vocal brilliance and unabashed rock 'n' roll showmanship are a bloody good combination… This night belonged to Maiden.” Indianaopolis Star – “Bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris… believes in speed and melody, traits that defined Sunday’s renditions of ‘The Trooper’ and ‘Run To The Hills’ [while] Bruce Dickinson provided the right amount of theatrics to ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ and ‘Number Of The Beast’… Iron Maiden saved the day” Hartford Courant – “Coming second to last on a 20-act, 14-hour bill, Iron Maiden negated all of the 18 previous performances with a 60-minute set of bombastic metal. The English band's songs featured actual riffs, sweeping vocal melodies and gobs of frantic guitar solos, and the musicians - particularly singer Bruce Dickinson - displayed a charisma not seen among the other bands.” Saturday, November 5. 2005A Little Catching Up To Do
I know it's been a while. Between the start of a new school year and my dad's back surgery I haven't been able to keep on a lot of things including this website. To make up for the absence I'll make a few posts about things that happened during the hiatus.
Thursday, July 14. 2005Clinton Has Her Hot Coffee
This whole Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas hot coffee controversy has gotten way out of hand. First off, you shouldn't be playing the game unless you're 18 and second you have to run a patch that alters the game from its original state to allow access to the mini games. Both the ESRB and Rockstar games have been taking a lot of heat the past week because of this patch.
I can't see how the ESRB is responsible in any way for the content of an altered game. Now if Rockstar had left a secret code in the game that allowed you to play these mini games then I think the ESRB should be partially responsible. To gain access to the mini games you have to run a third party patch. Rockstar is saying that the mini games were never in the "source code" and the patch creates the mini games from scratch. I find this extremely hard to believe as altering a binary file that much would be one hell an accomplishment. I believe for some odd reason Rock Star had the mini games programmed in to the game, possibly by bored programmers, and instead of removing them completely from the final code they just removed the links in the code. Now to get to the Clinton part of this. Hillary Clinton said today that she is going to author a bill that would make it a federal crime to sell mature games to minors. I see no wrong in this. I was personally told by an eight year old that he liked play GTA 3 because he liked killing cops. Clinton said, "No wonder these games are falling into the hands of our children and no wonder so many parents feel everyday like they are fighting this battle with their hands tied behind their backs." Where's the everyday battle? What's so hard about look at the front of the box before purchasing a game for a child? Are these parents' lives so busy they can't see what their children are playing? The only reason the parents have their hands tied is because they are so damn lazy. It's unfortunate that we have make laws so that parents will do their job. Clinton goes on to say, "We need to do better. We need to do everything we can to make sure that parents have a line of defense against violent and graphic video games and other content that go against the values they are trying to instill in their children." We already have this line of defense. It's the bloody parents. She doesn't want to say it because it might piss off some voters. Tuesday, July 12. 2005Top Ten Car Chases (Again)
It seems like they make one of these lists every couple months. I have
to say, so far, this is the worst one. How does the Gone in 60 Seconds remake rank higher than the original? How does The Fast and the Furious make the list and the Bourne Supremacy doesn't? How does the Italian Job remake make the list but the original doesn't? I guess this is what happens when you ask a bunch of people who probably haven't seen all the movies on the list. Any one that voted for The Fast and the Furious needs to be drug out in the street and shot. I'm not saying the list is all bad. Bullitt came out on top with a whoping 40% of the votes and such classics as The French Connection, Vanishing Point and Ronin did make the top ten. Original Story: CNN Money |
